OE Mirror

Augmenting qualitative information

«OE-Mirror» facilitates a feedback process on open-ended responses as part of a structured online survey. The open-ended responses that a participant provides are displayed ('mirrored') to the other respondents during the ongoing interview, and they are asked to provide an assessment or comments. In this way, the open-ended responses become more than just singular statements, also containing information on what other people in the target group think in response.

Your Questions

  • With which arguments can certain responses/opinions be countered?

  • Which responses/opinions are comprehensible? Which can command a majority? Where can discrepancies be detected?

  • Between which responses/opinions does the target group perceive similarities? Which categories does the target group believe can be distinguished?

  • Which underlying motives does the target group ascribe to certain responses/opinions?

Our Solution

«OE-Mirror» is available as an online application to flexibly edit both the type of query and the scaling. After creating, resp. editing, the initial question ('standard' open-ended response), it is defined how other persons should 'process' this response. There are three options:

  • commentary in a text box

  • assessment by multiple choice

  • assessment by rating scale

Depending on the selection, other details may be necessary  (number and name of grades in the scale, editing of question texts). The interview can be integrated into any online questionnaire, provided it includes a 'GoTo' function for external pages and a 'Back' function .

Your Results

Depending on your questions, you will receive information on

  • where there is agreement with open-ended statements, i.e. opinions,

  • where there are discrepancies or even polarizations,

  • which statements or arguments are (not) comprehensible,

  • what reactions are triggered by certain statements or opinions,

  • which arguments or counter-arguments can be articulated in response to certain statements and

  • the underlying motives the target group ascribes to certain responses/opinions.

The evaluation can be made on the level of categories or on the basis of individual responses, provided there is a sufficient number of cases.
